A save the date is a short, early heads-up: we're getting married on this date, please keep it free. It isn't the full invitation. It goes out first, so guests can plan leave, book travel and avoid clashing with another family function.
Do you need one?
Not every wedding does. A save the date is most useful when:
- it's a destination wedding, or many guests have to travel
- the date falls in peak wedding season, when guests have several weddings to choose between
- it's on or near a festival or long weekend, when flights and trains fill up early
- you have relatives abroad who need time to plan the trip
For a local wedding in the off-season, the invitation alone is usually enough.
When to send it
- Destination or overseas guests: four to six months ahead
- Peak-season wedding with outstation guests: three to four months ahead
- Local wedding: two to three months ahead, if at all
Send it only once your date and city are fixed. Changing a save the date is more awkward than changing an invitation.
What to include
- Your names
- The date, or the dates if functions run over several days
- The city or venue, if it's confirmed
- "Invitation to follow"
Leave out function timings, venues for each event and RSVPs. Those belong in the invitation.
Ideas that work well
- A photo from your pre-wedding shoot with the date written on it. Simple and always loved.
- A short reel of 10 to 15 seconds, with a song you both love, ending on the date.
- A themed illustration, like a train ticket for a hill wedding, a boarding pass for a destination wedding, or a film poster for a Bollywood-loving couple.
- A calendar page with your date circled, the classic save the date.
- A wedding website link that starts as a save the date and becomes the full invitation later, on the same link. Guests who saved it already have everything when the details go live.

Tips
- Send it personally on WhatsApp, not in big groups. (See how to send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp.)
- Only send it to people who will get the full invitation. A save the date is a promise of an invite.
- For elders, mention it on a call too.
